The MBF 5 Safety Rules

Let’s learn the 5 Safety Rules and their motions with a little help from…

Safety Rule #1 – Know What’s Up Safety Rule #1 means you Know What’s Up, such as: Your personal information How to get help in an emergency General safety information Family, home, and online safety rules The motion is to tap both of your first (index) fingers on either side of your head at the temples, and then point your fingers into the air while saying, “Know What’s Up.”

Safety Rule #2 – Spot Red Flags Safety Rule #2 teaches you how to Spot Red Flags, or signs of unsafe situations, potentially dangerous behavior, or abusive behavior, like tricks, force, and unsafe secrets. The motion is to be on the lookout for red flags by holding your hands over your eyes like you are searching for clues, while saying, “Spot Red Flags.”

Safety Rule #3 – Make A Move Safety Rule #3 teaches you how to Make a Move toward safety or away from unsafe situations when you Spot Red Flags.  You can Make a Move and GET AWAY or STAY AWAY, to help you be safe. The motion is to Make A Move of your choice (dance, run) while staying in place and saying, “Make A Move.”

Safety Rule #4 – Talk It Up Safety Rule #4 teaches you to use a strong or assertive voice to Talk It Up and say “NO” to unwanted touches, behaviors, or other red flags. It also teaches you to talk to a Safe Adult to ask for help, and to tell them if you have been hurt. Lastly, it asks you to be an upstander and Talk It Up if you see someone else being bullied or hurt. The motion is to make a megaphone with your hands around your mouth and say, “Talk It Up.”

Safety Rule #5 – No Blame | No Shame Safety Rule #5 is No Blame | No Shame. If you are ever hurt it is never your fault. Adults are responsible for keeping you safe, so you are not to blame. There is also no shame in telling a Safe Adult, even if you were hurt long ago and you didn’t tell then, or even if you were told you shouldn’t tell or you would get in trouble. The motion is to make a thumbs up with your left thumb while saying, “No Blame” and then make a thumbs up with your right thumb while saying, “No Shame.”
