The Role of NAEP in Virginia Shelley Loving-Ryder Virginia Department of Education

Use of Assessment Frameworks Informs revision of state content standards Virginia reviews its content standards every seven years. Alignment with NAEP frameworks is considered in this process.

Catalyst for Educational Reform In the mid 1990’s Virginia’s performance on the grade 4 NAEP reading assessment provided support for educational reform.

Virginia & NAEP Percent Proficient or Above Grade-4 Reading

External Referent Virginia never adopted the Common Core State Standards so NAEP’s function as an external referent has been important Focus on subgroups as well as overall performance
