The Role of the Tutor in the School Placement Experience Tuesday 25th February 2014 Tutor CPD Seminar

2

Pre School Placement Interaction Meet with the student teacher prior to SP to provide guidance and support. Discuss schemes and lesson plans and provide constructive feedback. If planning is not satisfactory student teacher must re-submit prior to SP commencing. Confirm timetable is in line with SP guidelines (15 classes). Ensure student teacher is aware of regulations set out in SP Handbook Complete Planning & Reflection Appraisal Guide for the Pre-SP meeting 3

School Visits Meet with principal/Deputy/ Mentor Teacher /Cooperating Teacher Feedback – clear, specific, constructive and supporting and encouraging. Tutor must ensure that the student teacher is clear about the key strengths and areas for development.

Post Placement Arrange a post-SP meeting. Check through teaching file and acknowledge completed reflections. Discuss and analyse post SP reflection – Can request that they send it to you prior to the meeting. Discuss student’s perception of how SP developed and seek an overall appraisal of professional development Complete Planning and Reflection Appraisal Guide for Post-SP Meeting

Contact with School A postcard must be sent to the school principal the week prior to visiting. This is still an issue. Arrive in good time for the lesson. Present yourself at the office/reception and ask to speak to the principal/cooperating teachers if possible. Communicate with other tutor to ensure 2 visits do not occur on the same day.

Agreeing a Grade Planning and preparation, including written schemes/lesson plans/resources and pre-SP appraisal. Lessons observed by SP tutors and the completed LAGs Written and oral self-evaluation by the student teacher including all reflections and post-SP appraisal. Written and/or oral feedback from the SP school. Updated grading rubric provided Agreed grade meeting with other tutor

Key Points Language used in LAGs: Ensure you use language that relates directly to the grading rubric. Always leave the written report (LAG) signed and rated by both student and tutor. Tutor should encourage close collaboration between the student teacher and the cooperating teacher. Updated grading rubric. It is essential that tutors communicate with each other and with the SP office as soon as there is a consideration of an A or F referral visit.

Please Remember! Week 1 – No visits Postcard must be sent to the school Late arrival to a class can put the final grade in jeopardy Complete LAGs carefully and professionally
