Electrolytic cells

Electrolytic Cells Non-Spontaneous meaning they REQUIRE ENERGY to operate Used to produce a product

Uses Electrolytic cells are used in mining (to separate metals from ores) and chemical production of gases like chlorine and hydrogen gas

Cell Diagram

Cell Potential Because electrolytic cells are non- spontaneous, the Ecell will be NEGATIVE! The cell potential is the minimum amount of energy that must be added for the reaction to take place!

Example Electrolysis of NaCl(aq)
