A New ARCP Checklist for ACCS Trainees Presentation to NACT18, London, 16 January 2018 William Gibbs ACCS (Anaesthetics) CT3, Derriford Hospital, Plymouth

Co-Authors Kate Holmes, Consultant Anaesthetist and Training Programme Director for Education (Anaesthesia), Derriford Hospital, Plymouth Justine Elliot, Consultant Anaesthetist and Training Programme Director for ACCS (Anaesthesia), Derriford Hospital, Plymouth Matthew Whitehouse, ACCS (EM) CT3, Derriford Hospital, Plymouth Vishnu Vijaykumar, ACCS (AM) CT2, Derriford Hospital, Plymouth

Background – ACCS Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) is a route of entry into training in anaesthesia, acute medicine or emergency medicine. Training comprises: CT1 year with 6 months EM and 6 months AM; CT2 year with 6 months ICM and 6 months anaesthesia; CT3 year in parent specialty. Trainees completing ACCS are eligible to enter higher training in their parent specialty.

Background – ACCS Portfolio in Peninsula ACCS trainees in Peninsula were required to complete a 26–page paper “ARCP record book” in addition to their specialty e–portfolio for ARCP in CT2. The same record book was used by all three ACCS streams.

Background – ACCS Trainee Portfolio Concerns Trainees raised concerns at ACCS quality panel: Requirements of the record book contradicted the specialty e–portfolios; Significant duplication existed; Additional paperwork was unnecessarily time–consuming.

Methods We proposed an alternative: a separate tailored two– page checklist for each ACCS stream. Advantages gained: No duplication from the e–portfolio; Requirements mapped to match the ACCS curriculum and specific e–portfolios; Reduced time required for completion; Clarification of requirements for all concerned.

Results and Key Messages Initial informal feedback has been very positive. The anaesthesia checklist is now used in Plymouth, and the checklists have been approved by TPDs for use across the deanery. This is a demonstration of successful collaborative working using the quality panel framework.

Reducing paperwork burden is good for both trainees and supervisors. Final Thoughts Reducing paperwork burden is good for both trainees and supervisors.
