Practice with Hypotheses Write a testable hypothesis for these situations. Use “If and then” statement

Mom and I were baking a cake for my brother’s birthday Mom and I were baking a cake for my brother’s birthday. We didn’t have any baking powder. The recipe said to add one teaspoon of baking powder to the cake batter. Since that’s such a small amount we baked the cake anyway. We were very disappointed when the cake came out of the oven flat instead of fluffy. We think maybe we needed to add the baking powder.

You and your friends were studying spelling lists and vocabulary lists You and your friends were studying spelling lists and vocabulary lists. It seemed like everyone could easily remember the first word on the list and the fifteenth word on the list. It seemed very hard to remember the words in the middle of the list.

The Acme Cleansers Company wants to do some advertising for its new anti-bacterial kitchen cleaner. The advertising executives want to run some tests that show that their new product is better than the best-selling brand of kitchen cleaner.

Variables Manipulated Variable – the variable that the scientist changes on purpose. Responding Variable – the variable that is the outcome or the result of the manipulated variable. Note: A manipulated variable is the same as an independent variable. A responding variable is the same as a dependent variable.

Determine a manipulated variable and a responding variable for each of the following questions. 1) Does heating a cup of water allow it to dissolve more sugar? Manipulated Variable ___________________________________ Responding Variable ____________________________________

2) Which fertilizer will make a plant grow faster? Manipulated Variable ________________________________ Responding Variable _________________________________

3) Will cheap popsicles melt faster than ones that cost more? Manipulated Variable _________________________________ Responding Variable __________________________________

4) Which type of faucet allows more water to pass through the openings? Manipulated Variable __________________________________ Responding Variable __________________________________

5) Does an electric motor turn faster if you increase the voltage? Manipulated Variable _________________________________ Responding Variable _________________________________

6) Which brand of toaster uses more electricity? Manipulated Variable _____________________________ Responding Variable ______________________________

7) What is the best time of day to focus during a test? Manipulated Variable ___________________________ Responding Variable ___________________________

8) What type of hook is best for holding a heavy painting? Manipulated Variable _________________________________ Responding Variable __________________________________

9) Which brand of whitening toothpaste whitens teeth better? Manipulated Variable ________________________________ Responding Variable __________________________________

10) Which type of cell phone will hold a battery charge the longest? Manipulated Variable _____________________________ Responding Variable _____________________________
