Semester Project Helpful Hints: Annotated Map of the Region All maps need to be colored, it says this in the instructions. Map annotations (drawings) need to be explained on a separate paper (also on instructions). You are required 10 annotations in the categories of Agriculture, History, Current Events, Resources, Culture. Because there are 5 things, go ahead and do 2 for each category. 2 agriculture, 2 history, 2 current events, 2 resources, 2 culture = 10 map annotations LABEL THEM, it doesn’t say to but it makes sense to and helps show your organization and EFFORT. Do not use any annotation people give you in class, some of those are not appropriate for an project like this. Timeline Don’t forget: your 5 annotated pictures (color them) Identify events as political, economic, and social (P, S, OR E is fine, and sometimes the event is more than one of these). Make sure pictures for annotations are all different (don’t draw 5 flags, BORING!) Also, this timeline is for the ENTIRE REGION, not just one country. Political Cartoon Color you picture. Don’t forget: explain the message of the cartoon on either the back or another piece of paper. Be thoughtful and thorough in your explanation!!! It says in the instructions assume the reader knows nothing about he topic so if you throw out the word Brexit and don’t explain what it is you will lose points. Or “Europe is getting a lot of refugees,” FROM WHERE? WHY? Have symbolism that has meaning. If you highlighting the impact of corruption don’t just draw a speech bubble saying “I’m corrupt!”…make the person looking at the cartoon THINK! Drawing a person to represent a person isn’t very symbolic…

Human Geo Application Demographic Extremes Current Event Miscellaneous WHERE IS YOUR DATA TO PROVE YOUR POINT?! Explain the human geo concepts…what is HDI? What goes into it? What is a pull/push factor? Net migration? You think this place has a lot of effects from globalization? Give me examples of global companies, international trade, pop culture! Demographic Extremes The three observations need to be more than just, “Chile’s life expectancy is 75.” I KNOW, I SAW THAT ON YOUR CHART. OR, “I can tell they are healthy and have a good education.” How do you know? The observations need to be inferences about the data. What do you learn about the country or region by looking at the data and how does it confirm what you already know about the place? “Haiti’s GDP and literacy rates are the lowest on the chart and this could be linked to the fact that they have the most corruption in Latin America and probably are not efficiently helping their citizens.” Current Event Find a current event that is relevant to the type of things we talk about in class. If you did something for a cartoon don’t do the same topic for your current event (boring). Highlight the article, summarize the article, and connect it to something in class. “Our NPR was related to this because… Miscellaneous Take pride in your work and show me you have taken time to be thoughtful and investigative. It is very obvious which ones are projects that are thrown together and the grade reflects that. PLEASE. READ. THE. INSTRUCTIONS. CAPITALIZE PROPER NOUNS, you learn that in kindergarten. I don’t like seeing lined notebook paper with stuff written in pencil…this is final draft. Don’t use the same topic for everything! Drug trafficking cartoon, migration analysis because of drug cartels, current event on drug trafficking.
