Today we will be learning to: understand what a ‘half’ and ‘quarter’ are recognise halves of different shapes count the number of halves and quarters know fractions are equal parts.

This is the answer, what’s the number sentence? Mental Activity This is the answer, what’s the number sentence? Think of a number sentence that has the same answer as the number you are given.

10 Think of a number sentence that has the same answer as the number you are given.

15 Think of a number sentence that has the same answer as the number you are given.

23 Think of a number sentence that has the same answer as the number you are given.

Main Activity Today we are going to find ‘one half’ and ‘one quarter’ of different things.

What is ‘one half’? Here is some chocolate.

Is this half?

Which part would you prefer?

Is this half?

Yes as it is in two equal parts.

What happens if we break both these halves in half?

We get quarters.

Quarters are four equal parts.

Top Tip You can write ‘a half’ as ½. You can write ‘a quarter’ as ¼.

How could you measure half a length of string? How could you measure quarter a length of string?

How could you measure half a paper shape? How could you measure quarter a paper shape?

You can partition objects into halves. How much would half this number be?

You can partition objects into halves. How much would half this number be? 4

You can partition objects into quarters. How many tins would be in each quarter?

You can partition objects into quarters. How many tins would be in each quarter? 2

Find one half and one quarter of a given number of objects. Group Work Find one half and one quarter of a given number of objects.
