Science Skills Now Passages –What are we looking for? Small tables and graphs Mostly numbers instead of words or symbols Easy to spot relationships or trends Short answers – “increase” or “decrease”

First Rule of ACT Science: Don’t be distracted by the Science!

Science Basics Approach Review Work the figures Start with the figures!! – Mark trends, note units Work the questions Look for questions with minimal words (POOD) Work the answers Use POE Read (if you have to…) There are some, but not many questions that require you to find an answer in the text

Types of Science Passages Charts and Graphs Science Basic Approach Experiments Fighting Scientists Read first!!!! – do not start with the questions!

Brainstorm

Things that we like Short answers! Opposite answers Numbers! (like “increase” or “decrease”) A. Yes because… Numbers! B. Yes because… C. No because … Simple axes! D. No because … Easy to spot relationships and trends

Things that we don’t like Long answers Lots of strange words/symbols Multiple axes Confusing graphs

Workbook Book Work – turn to page 556 Read the Graph Extend the Data Find the Intersection Don’t Read!... Use POE …Unless you have to I DO

Scary Science Jeopardy

Science by any other name 15 minutes – let’s practice! Remember: Work the Figure Work the Questions Work the Answers Don’t read… Unless you have to
