Urbanization of the Western World What is urbanization? The West- along with Europe, wanted to trade Environment- issues from industrialization & urbanization Health- issues from environment, sanitation, and working conditions, but improvements from advancements in medicine and science Upward Mobility- improving and moving up the social ladder

Emancipation Slavery in the US- Southern states in the US had been able to own slaves until Abraham Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation and freed them (1862-63) Serfdom in Russia- Peasant bound to the land Czar Alexander II emancipated the serfs in Russia Peasants could own property & marry who they chose

Suffrage Definition- the right to vote Universal male suffrage- all adult men could vote; result of 2nd FR Women’s suffrage- Gained in some European countries in late 19th century 19th Amendment in 1920 gave women the right to vote

Western Imperialism Western powers, N & S America were colonizing and ruling over other nations throughout the world

Marx’s Theory Karl Marx wrote The Communist Manifesto, which disagreed with the conditions in factories They blamed capitalism (what is capitalism?) for the conditions Their solution to the problem was Marxist socialism, aka communism Communism- system in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs
