Reed Lakes Morning, Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska Reed Lakes Morning, Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska. An overnight solo backpacking trip in August 2005 took Ken Zafren to this serene lake where he captured its peaceful beauty in this photo. Photo © Ken Zafren, MD, Anchorage, Alaska. Western black widow spider (Latrodectus hesperus) with egg sac Western black widow spider (Latrodectus hesperus) with egg sac. Eggs of widow spiders are laid in an egg sack, attached to the web of the mother. The pear-shaped sack can hold 200 to 500 eggs. Because widow spider venoms around the world are very similar, development of a universal antivenom with worldwide efficacy is quite possible. Photo © Sean P. Bush, MD, Loma Linda, California.
