The Role of Vice Principal November 2011 Count, Read, Succeed for Leaders!

Count What really counts / matters to you? Moral imperative Vision – ‘The very essence of leadership is that you have a vision’ Pupils – we are here to improve the quality of our young peoples lives Families – we are here to listen to and support families Staff – Support / Nurture / Develop – Confidence to share and the humility to learn Explicit about our values and model respect Data!!

Read School based research – evidence based profession Inquiry based leadership – a finding out culture Developments in how the brain works and how children learn – Neuroscience / Education Develop the skill of reflection – give ourselves and our staff time to reflect on insights and learning Spiral curriculum – Practice led / evidence based / inquiry focused / research informed Reading for pleasure!

Succeed What do we need to be able to succeed / survive? Distribute / facilitate leadership Accept that you don’t always have the answers Admit when you are wrong – the power of the apology! Break habits / take risks Share information and the reasons for decisions Emotional resilience to cope with the highs and lows Listen to / welcome criticism! Enthusiasm is contagious but so is depression! Have a sense of humour Focus on the children – remember why you are there
