Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood The Background for the Flood (Genesis 6:1-13) Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, That the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood The earth was filled with sin (vv 1-4) “Sons of God” = bene elohim The Godly line of Seth Ungodly (possibly possessed) rulers A group of fallen angels Strive = doon His days shall be 120 years Nephilim = nephilim LXX translates nephilim as gigantes (γιγαντεs)

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood The LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood The earth was filled with evil (vv 5-8) Sorry = nakham Sorry Grieved Regretful “The Lord was sorry” May be statement from the writer’s viewpoint “But Noah found favor” Favor = chen (grace)

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God. Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood The earth was filled with violence (vv 9-12) Corrupt = shachath – Implies morally corrupt and ruined (v 11) Filled (v 11) – How “full” is “filled”? Average 10 children per family = 24,000,000 people Average 20 children per family = 22,000,000,000 people

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch.

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood The Ark (vv 13-16) Ark = tabhah Gopher wood = gofer The Specifications of the Ark (18” cubit) 450’ x 50’ x 30’ Deck area of 101,000 ft2 (equal to 569 railroad stock cars) Volume of 1,520,000 ft3 Displacement tonnage of 21,700 tons

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood The Appearance of the Ark Large rectangular box (similar to a barge) Window = tsohar – “An opening for light” The Stability of the Ark 6 to 1 length to width ratio would have been extremely stable The Time to Build the Ark 100 years (finished early) The Covering of the Ark Pitch = kopher – Probably a type of resin Kopher = “Atonement” elsewhere in OT

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.”

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood Then the LORD said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time. You shall take with you of every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female; Also of the birds of the sky, by sevens, male and female, to keep offspring alive on the face of all the earth.

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood The Animals (Genesis 6:19-22; 7:1-9; 7:13-16) The Type of Animals All that had the “breath of life” The Number of Animals Estimated between 45,000 and 90,000 The Arrival of the Animals God sent them! The Survival of the Animals Kept in cages Many probably hibernated

Genesis 6 & 7: The Preparation for the Great Flood Conclusion Noah did not have to get the animals out of the muddy-muddy; God took care of it God would soon take care of all of them while the earth is destroyed by a mabbul
