Field Leader (Hiking) Case Study What are Jim’s motivations for going further? How did these motivations influence his decision making? Jim’s motivations are an important part of his leadership style. What advice would you give him to ensure his motivations are used to promote quality as opposed to increasing risk? Slide 1

Field Leader (Hiking) The Leader This course is designed to help you run events that are of the highest quality and safety Slide 2

For your event to be of the highest quality, two things must happen: Field Leader (Hiking) For your event to be of the highest quality, two things must happen: The participants’ needs MUST come first during every stage of planning and delivery You must be passionate about your leadership role, and passion comes from having your needs met too! Slide 3

Field Leader (Hiking) Balancing your needs and those of the participants' requires understanding what motivates us. Then, recognize motivations that: Are satisfied through the event. These we should treasure. 2. Have no place on our event. These we must do in our own time. 3. Are in conflict, but must be met anyway. These we must balance. Slide 4

Field Leader (Hiking) Managing this process requires effort To understand ourselves To understand how our motivations impact our role as a leader And time… It is a journey, not a destination Slide 5

Self Assessment Exercise Field Leader (Hiking) Self Assessment Exercise Write down the reasons why you like going outdoors. Using one colour, circle the motivations that are compatible with leading events.
