Traditional vs Modern Class System

The BIG Idea Theories – Marxism We are Learning to... Deepen our understanding of Marxist sociological theory. Discover three key concepts used by Marxist sociologists to explain how society works. In today’s lesson... GOOD Learning... Be able to give a brief outline of the Marxist approach to society, using a key concept and an example. GREAT LEARNING... Be able to give a detailed outline of the Marxist approach to society, explaining the relevance of one or more key concepts, using examples to develop your points. EVEN BETTER... Be able to give a detailed outline of the Marxist approach to society, explaining the relevance of more than one key concept, using examples to develop your points, and identify a criticism of the Marxist approach.

Karl Marx (1818-1883) The capitalist economy is a source of misery for many people. It is the economic base that shapes the rest of society. The bourgeoisie are the ruling class who own the means of production (e.g. factories, farms, etc.) and exploit the labour of the working class (the proletariat). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWQ9dgGsVew&feature=g-wl The proletariat will eventually realise they are being exploited, and overthrow the bourgeoisie! Marxism is focussed on the conflict that exists between different groups in society (the working classes and the ruling classes), and challenging it.

The role of the economy in society – link to starter activity.

False Consciousness To maintain their position at the top of society, Marx claimed that the ruling classes must prevent the working class from realising their exploitation. Marx claimed that one way they did this was by controlling the information people receive, and using that to control how people think about things happening in society. He called this the creation of a ‘false consciousness’ in the proletariat.

“Kate’s £10k Delivery Suite” CHAMPAGNE, luxury toiletries and a reclining chair for daddy — just some of the extras in the plush maternity unit where Kate Middleton will give birth. When the baby is born, top chefs will be on hand to whip up whatever Kate and Prince William fancy to eat. The cost of a suite at the unit is £6,265 for a one-night stay with no complications and £2,200 for each extra night. 15/Jul/13 This marriage of two rich socialites “has captured the imagination of the world” apparently. Or so they newspapers would have you think. How can the media coverage of the royal family be said to be an example of the media creating a ‘false consciousness’?

Marxism Group Task Exploitation of the Working Class (Karl Marx) The Economic Base (Karl Marx) Exploitation of the Working Class (Karl Marx) False Consciousness (Karl Marx) Who owns the means of production (e.g. businesses) and their relationship with the workers will influence other areas of society. In a capitalist society, people who own the means of production will exploit people who have to sell their labour to survive. The ruling classes will push ideas in society that justify their position in society, and persuade the workers to accept theirs. EXTENTION – CRITICISE IT, THEN SWAP THE TOPICS Functionalism and Family: Murdock believes that the family provides four vital functions for society: sexual, reproductive, economic and educational. The family is the primary point of socialization in that it provides children with values and norms. Family also stabilizes adult personalities. A family unit provides emotional security for each person in the relationship. Functionalism and Crime and Deviance: Durkheim shows us that there is such a thing as society, and that it is this entity called society that creates crime and deviance. Crime and deviance are socially constructed - they are not natural, obvious, or theologically inspired categories. They are concepts that were brought into the world solely by humankind. Functionalism and Religion: Religion contributes to the social structure and well-being of society. It does this by teaching values and consensus. Durkheim saw social life as impossible to achieve without the shared values and norms achieved through collective conscience. Religion comes with values and norms that are shared between groups. This helps strengthen the integration of society. Parsons argued that religious beliefs provide guidelines and that these guidelines establish general principles and moral beliefs which provide stability and order for society. How is the economic base reflected in how schools are organised? How might the family keep the working classes exploited? How might religious belief be an example of false consciousness?
