Task Force on Crime Statistics 17-18 October 2006 Recommendations in Transcrime report 1-13 Definitions Harmonise definitions of crime types 14-21 Variables Collect ‘background’ variables e.g. on offender/victim 22 Organisation Centralised body for crime statistics 23 Data collection time to homogenise between when reported/when investigated 24-26 Data collection criteria offence as counting unit principal offence rule multiple offences count separately offences by multiple persons count as one 1

Task Force on Crime Statistics 17-18 October 2006 Specific issues in Transcrime report Missing information : Nothing on Belgium, France, Ireland, Malta, Austria No data (only definitions) on Bulgaria, Finland, UK, Italy Which of the five crime types are most promising for data collection (and which least)? Could the data series be continued? Using sources identified in study Or using better sources Is there any possibility of centralising data collection on reporting, prosecution and sentencing ( = Recommendation 22)? 1
