Yes. Jay says that it is unfair for colonists to fight for freedom from Britain, but to not give slaves their freedom. He believes America should “emancipate these unhappy people.” No. Pinckney believes slaves are needed to take care of the land and are necessary for the American economy. Without slaves, he thinks “South Carolina would soon be a desert waste.” After 20 years, there would be enough slaves in the U.S. to reproduce and continue growing the slave population.
