Boston Massacre March 5, 1770

Causes of the Boston Massacre Royal Proclamation of 1763: Colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. George Grenville (Prime Minister) had to find ways to pay Britain’s debt and for the cost of 10,000 British Troops in N.A.

English Oppression Loss of Money for Colonists Customs Duties: Taxes on imports and exports. The Sugar Act: Tax on raw sugar, silk, wine, coffee and indigo The Currency Act of 1764: Enacted to slow inflation. Colonists like inflation. Why? The Stamp Act (1765): Stamps had to be placed on newspapers, mortgages, playing cards, etc.

English Oppression Loss of Rights for the Colonists Royal Proclamation of 1763: Colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. Smugglers would now be tried by vice-admiralty courts in Halifax, Nova Scotia The Sugar Act allowed British officials to seize goods without due process. The Quartering Act: British soldiers could stay in vacant buildings, inns or taverns and colonists had to pay for it.

Frustration Mounts Sons of Liberty form in 1765: The liked to intimidate stamp distributors. Stamp Act Congress also formed in 1765: Wrote the Declaration of Rights and Grievances. They sent this petition to the king.

Frustration Mounts Non-importation agreement: Colonies would not buy British goods. British Parliament did away with the Stamp Act, but passed the Declaratory Act: Parliament has the power to make laws for the colonies. Charles Townshend passed the Townshend Acts: Customs duties on glass, lead, paper, paint AND TEA! Writs of Assistance: Search Warrants for Customs officials.

The Boston Massacre……... What really happened?

March 5, 1770 Mob grows outside of the Boston Customs House. Colonists were taunting soldiers and throwing snowballs filled with rocks and shells.

March 5, 1770 British reinforcements called British Captain Thomas Preston arrived with other soldiers and a shot was fired.

Massacre British open fire 20 minutes 5 dead, 6 wounded

First Death of the Revolution Crispus Attucks African American Bayonet wounds

News Spread Colonial newspapers and Paul Revere Repeal of Townshend Acts Tea?

Debate? Who is to blame for the events of March 5, 1770? Did the British fire on “unarmed” citizens? Did the Americans throw more than snowballs? Did Preston order the British to open fire?
