Ratios and Proportion The ratio of the number of girls to the number of Boys is 5:3. What fraction of the students are girls? If there are 150 girls, how many students are there altogether?

Ratios and Proportion Solve: 𝐺 𝐵 = 5 3 , so 𝐺 𝐵+𝐺 = 5 8 Answer: 5 8 of the students are girls 150 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 5 8 , so 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙=240 Answer: There are 240 students altogether.

Ratios and Proportion Practice: Pat the Painter mixed 3 pints of yellow paint with 4 pints of green paint to make a nifty new color. He used 27 pints of yellow paint. How many pints of green paint will he need? Set up a proportion to complete the problem.

Ratios and Proportion Solve: Given 𝒀𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒏 = 𝟑 𝟒 Set up proportion 𝟑 𝟒 = 𝟐𝟕 𝒙 𝒙=𝟑𝟔 𝑷𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒔 Answer: He will need 36 pints of green paint .

Fractions Practice 1 2 ÷ 1 6 Solve: 1 2 ÷ 1 6 = 1 2 × 6 1 =3

Fractions Practice 1 4 ÷3 Solve: 1 4 ÷3= 1 4 ÷ 3 1 = 1 4 × 1 3 = 1 12

Fractions Practice 1 5 + 1 4 − 3 10 Solve: 1 5 + 1 4 − 3 10 = 4 20 + 5 20 − 6 20 = = 4+5−6 20 = 3 20

Fractions Practice 2 3 + 5 7 × 7 9 Solve: 2 3 + 5 7 × 7 9 = 2 3 + 5 9 = 6 9 + 5 9 = 11 9 =1 2 9

Fractions Mrs. Johnson’s class had 2 3 5 pizzas left after the lunch. Mr. Cain’s class had 1 3 10 pizzas left after lunch. How many pizzas are left altogether?

Fractions Solve: 2 3 5 +1 3 10 = 13 5 + 13 10 = 26 10 + 13 10 = 39 10 =3 9 10 Or 2 3 5 +1 3 10 =3+ 3 5 + 3 10 =3+ 6 10 + 3 10 =3 9 10

Fractions You have 3 4 of a pizza and you want to share it equally between 5 people. How much of the pizza does each person get? Solve: 3 4 ÷5= 3 4 ÷ 5 1 = 3 4 × 1 5 = 3 20 Answer: each person gets 3 20 of the pizza.

Thank you
