Agenda 12/1 Microbial Shift Reading Design a ‘superbug’ Homework: Helper T Cells Video and Notes, finish superbug Turn in: Chp 35 Notes and Video Notes

Innate Immunity and Normal Flora How does the normal bacteria in/on your body act as a component of the innate immune system? What are things that can disrupt your ‘normal flora’?

Microbial Shift Diseases Diseases that are a result of a ‘shift’ in the normal population of bacteria On skin, in intestines, etc. Antibiotics are a big culprit Ex: IBS, Chrons?, Clostridum difficile (c. diff), diabetes?, autism?

C. diff Many strains resistant to antibiotics Causes diarrhea- usually after a prolonged hospital stay Antibiotics as preventive measure or to treat infection Many people have consistent relapses

Warning! Graphic Picture

Directions 1. Read article and answer guiding questions along the way 2. Check understanding with a partner 3. Think about further study or interesting topics you would like to study more
