802.11 2nd Vice Chair’s Report - Nov 2010 May 2006 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0528r0 November 2010 802.11 2nd Vice Chair’s Report - Nov 2010 Date: 2010-11-08 Authors: Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation Bruce Kraemer, Marvell

November 2010 Introduction This presentation is a status update on attendance, membership, balloting and documentation matters. If you are new to 802.11, read document 11-10/0274: (https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/10/11-10-0274-00-0000-802-11-new-participant-introduction.ppt) That document covers material every 802.11 member needs to know: Places to look for information, Policies and Procedures, Patent Policy, WG Guidelines, Network, Attendance, Membership, Documentation, Reflectors Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation

802.11 Assigned Numbers Authority (ANA) November 2010 802.11 Assigned Numbers Authority (ANA) The 802.11 ANA is Adrian Stephens The purpose of the ANA is to ensure we have no conflicts for numbers between parallel 802.11 developments. Such a conflict has the potential to create interoperability problems. The ANA Process: Request by TG Editor (or TG chair) to ANA ANA checks for conflicts with TG Editors ANA issues revised spreadsheet showing any changes Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation

ANA - 2 The latest database is 11-09/0031r14 (2010-11-02) November 2010 ANA - 2 The latest database is 11-09/0031r14 (2010-11-02) The main change is that the published .11w has one implicit allocation (7.4.7.1, Table 7-57e value 9) which collided with a value already allocated to TGv TGv changes: Allocation for 7.4.7.1 Location Track Notification changed to 15 Allocation for two Element IDs and three Status Codes TGu changes: Allocation for one Status Code, release for one status code, and a number of adjustments to Table 11-2 to match status code table Draft P802.11ad_D1.0 uses “type=11” The ANA database indicates that a WG-level discussion is needed before the ANA can respond to any request for this resource See document 11-10/1230r0. Possible discussion on Wednesday. Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation

Current Membership Status May 2006 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0528r0 November 2010 Current Membership Status Status Number Aspirant 114 Potential Voter 76 Voter 279 Definitions: Aspirant: a member who has attended 1 qualifying meeting Potential Voter: a member who has attended 2 qualifying meetings and will become a voter at the start of the next plenary they attend Data as of 2010-10-25 Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation Bruce Kraemer, Marvell

May 2006 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0528r0 November 2010 Voting member changes Note, figures do not include effect of LB168 or LB169, which completed < 14 days from the start of the session. LB168 and LB169 adjustments will be delayed until after this session. LB168 will result in loss of 6 voters LB169 will result in loss of additional 13 voters Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation Bruce Kraemer, Marvell

Membership – Historic Data November 2010 Membership – Historic Data Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation

November 2010 Balloting - 1 Each WG letter ballot sequence (i.e., task group) has its own voting pool set to the voting members of 802.11 at the time the ballot first reaches 75% approval. I get asked all the time “should I vote on this ballot” The answer is “go check the voters list published with each and every ballot”. There’s a link on the 802.11 home page during the ballot. Every ballot, a number of people who are not eligible to vote try to do so. We weed these votes during an audit of the results. Use only the template spreadsheet upload to submit comments The voting tool supports other options – don’t use them We need this to collect additional data, e.g. “must be satisfied” per comment Each ballot, several people don’t follow these instructions, and the WG officers have to determine how to treat the comments. Use your 802.11 Secret Member ID Ask Adrian for your number if you’ve lost it Using the wrong voters ID can overwrite the votes of other members. Every ballot a few people vote using their SA-Pin, or some other inexplicable number. At worst they vote using the wrong ID, a different email address, and a new variant of their name. The WG officers have to do an audit and correct these errors. Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation

November 2010 Balloting – 2 The automated system used to collect balloting data is not perfect This is “ebadmin”, maintained by the IEEE-SA staff It crashed during the LB169 ballot and produced inaccurate results (out by a few votes) The WG officers corrected the result using copies of the confirmation emails sent to voters Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation

Recording Attendance Record attendance using this URL: May 2006 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0528r0 November 2010 Recording Attendance It is a requirement that attendees register, in order that a correct record of attendees and their disclosed affiliations can be recorded in the minutes. You must record 75% attendance of eligible 802.11 slots in a session for that session to count towards gaining or maintaining 802.11 voting membership You need a single IEEE-SA web account The IEEE SA web account requires a working email address do not remove your email address from the account Use the email address associated with that web account when registering attendance If you change email addresses, update the web account, don’t create a new web account, or your membership status may not be calculated properly Record attendance using this URL: http://newton.events.ieee.org Click the “802.11” attendance link on the left hand side Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation Bruce Kraemer, Marvell

November 2010 Online Calendar This session’s meetings are also shown on the 802.11 calendar on the 802.11 home page (http://www.ieee802.org/11). This is a Google calendar “802_11_calendar@ieee.org” There are multiple ways of accessing this information, for example from a cell-phone, or as a remote calendar. Note: the schedule on this calendar will probably not be updated during the meeting. Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation

Synchronizing while at the meeting November 2010 Synchronizing while at the meeting Particularly important when external bandwidth is limited and unreliable Use anonymous ftp Host: ftp://newton.events.ieee.org User: anonymous Password: <your-email-address-here> Destination directory: /802.11/10 Freeware tools are available, for example search for “syncback free” ** ** Other tools are available. The IEEE does not endorse the use of any particular tool. Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation

Email Reflectors November 2010 May 2006 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0528r0 Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation Bruce Kraemer, Marvell

May 2006 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0528r0 November 2010 Reflector Requests There is an email reflector for the working group, plus one for each task group. Access to the reflector is limited to those who are members with status: aspirant, nearly-voter, potential-voter, voter. To change your access, visit the reflector request page: http://www.ieee802.org/11/Reflector.html Gathers information and sends an email to Vice Chair If you change email address – please let me know. I will perform a global change to the list servers. Adrian Stephens, Intel Corporation Bruce Kraemer, Marvell
