“Understanding how design can have a positive impact on others”. NEA MINI ASSESSMENT Lesson 9/10 DESIGN FOR SOCIETY “Understanding how design can have a positive impact on others”. Learning Aims: Understand the importance of modelling and prototyping prior to manufacture. Develop skills in being able to model using blue foam one of your developed design ideas. Confidence building in using a range of tools and equipment.

GCSE Design Technology – Toothbrush redesign for an elderly person DO NOW ACTIVITY Why do we model before manufacture? What would go wrong is we simply dived in and made? Write your response on the post it note and stick it on the wall for discussion. The BIG question

GCSE Design Technology – Toothbrush redesign for an elderly person Modelling in industry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1dFyj1QzG0&t=7s Importance of product development – Dyson Video Watch the videos carefully. Classroom discussion to follow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0nhQonMbH8 Modelling with cardboard – Dyson Video

Modelling your toothbrush idea. GCSE Design Technology – Toothbrush redesign for an elderly person Modelling your toothbrush idea. Today you will model your developed design idea using blue foam. This is an excellent material for modelling as you can sculpt designs using general equipment such as files and sand paper You will all be provided with a toothbrush to model with and it is up to you how you complete this. Do you model around it? Cut it to fit into your modelled handle?

Modelling your toothbrush idea. GCSE Design Technology – Toothbrush redesign for an elderly person Modelling your toothbrush idea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2a-5xRWsZ0 If the department has this resource use this slide. Equipment you could also use.

Modelling your toothbrush idea. GCSE Design Technology – Toothbrush redesign for an elderly person Modelling your toothbrush idea. You may have noticed on the video the man used a template to cut around. This will ensure it is accurate. YOU WILL BE DOING THE SAME. The cardboard template needs to be the same size and simply the outer shape. The cardboard template will be attached to the blue foam using double sided tape. Before you can START you need to know the thickness of your toothbrush(as well as length and width) so that it can prep and cut for you. If the department has this resource use this slide.

GCSE Design Technology – Toothbrush redesign for an elderly person Hot wire cutter – H&S Blue foam can also be cut by hand with a craft knife. Holes can be drilled (if your design requires) Filed to shape Course and fine sand paper to finish. You must: Wear safety glasses Wear an apron Not have your fingers too close to the cutter Take you time and concentrate DO NOT FORCE THE FOAM. DO NOT TRY & PEEL OF STUCK PIECES FROM THE WIRE TURN OFF ONCE FINISHED. ONLY one person to use at ONE time. If the department has this resource use this slide.
