BAT Test Demonstration Version Includes sample items from the LEBAT, COBAT, and PROBAT

Instructions: The following items will assess your ability to apply rules to specific problems as well as your ability to combine separate pieces of information to come to specific conclusions. Let me show you an example of the kind of questions that will be asked.

Example At 2:30AM a man called the police to report the theft of his 2-year- old convertible sports car. When Officer Wendt arrived to investigate, he discovered that: (1) there was no broken glass in the driveway; (2) the mans 17-year-old daughter was not present; they had argued earlier in the evening because of a party she wanted to attend that night (she was grounded and instructed to spend the night in her room); (3) nobody witnessed any suspicious activity or individuals that evening; (4) the man said he had lost his car keys. Which of the following is the most likely explanation? A. The car was not stolen; the mans daughter took the car. B. The mans daughter was kidnapped by the person who stole the car. C. The car was repossessed by the bank. D. The mans wife took the car to go grocery shopping.

Now get ready to answer questions similar to this one. Remember that you will have from 25 to 45 seconds to answer each question. At times, it may be difficult to keep up with the pace of questions, but you should not get frustrated. If you miss a question, skip it on the answer sheet and just focus on the next question. Make sure to circle your answer next to the appropriate item number. Ready?

Item 1 Officer Smith pulls over a vehicle traveling at a high speed. The driver acts nervous when the officer approaches the vehicle. When Officer Smith asks for the drivers license and registration, the driver produces his license but tells the officer that he cannot find his registration but assures the officer that it is his car. The officer returns to his patrol car and checks the cars license plate. The name of the owner and driver do not match. With the information provided, what is the most likely explanation? A. The driver borrowed his neighbors car. B. The driver is intoxicated. C. The car is stolen. D. The driver is wanted for burglary.

Instructions: The following items will assess your ability to correctly follow a set of rules in the course of your job as a Correctional Probation Officer. A set of rules will be presented and a series of questions will follow. Please select the alternative that best answers the question.

Example: The following is a set of rules for the formation of officer badge numbers for new officers. The number is always 5 digits long. The first number is always odd. The final number is always even.

Example Item 1 Which of the following is not a valid id number? A B C D

Answer The correct answer would be A because the last digit is odd instead of even.

Example Item What color was the first light that flashed? A. Blue B. Red C. White D. None of the above
