THE AMAZING PORTUGUSESE MAN OF WAR BY JR

Portuguese man of war The Portuguese man of war is a colony of organisms called polyps. They are often mistaken for jellyfish.

Habitat They are found throughout warm tropical waters . Commonly found in open oceans they can be directed to shallow waters . They are found in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Caribbean Oceans.

Nutrition They feed on a wide variety of soft body prey, including fish, fish larvae, cephalopods, and eel larvae. Once prey is caught the tentacles contract to bring prey in to contact with multiple digestive polyps.

Reproduction Each polyp is either male or female. Fertilization occurs when sperm from one colony fuses with eggs from another.

Movement Man of war float in groups of thousands . They have no means of propulsion besides drifting.

Size There float is 12 inches long 5 inches wide. There tentacles can reach 165 feet.
