Second Person Attachment BREATHING APPARATUS Second Person Attachment

Introduction The F&RS uses the Drager PSS7000, one of the features of this set is the provision of an additional attachment. This allows the wearer, who is experiencing set malfunction, loss of air, to attach to another persons BA set and draw air from their supply This procedure must only be carried out operationally if the following occurs: A BA wearer has an air supply failure and exiting to clean air would be unsafe to attempt. When entrapped procedure is adopted, a BA wearer has almost exhausted their cylinder contents and a second BA wearer has a surplus of air that will provide both wearers with a supply.

Terminology Recipient – the person who requires the additional air. Donor- the person who provides the additional air.

Primary Procedure “I NEED AIR, I NEED AIR” The BA wearer requiring the air (Recipient) gains the attention of another team member (Donor) and holds up his gauge stating; “I NEED AIR, I NEED AIR” The potential Donor checks their own air pressure and if they are able to assist they reply; “I CAN GIVE YOU AIR, I CAN GIVE YOU AIR”

The wearers should be in close proximity to each other and should carry out the procedure in a kneeling position to conserve air

Procedure to follow “BLANK CAP OFF, BLANK CAP OFF” The Donor removes the protective blank cap from their own second person attachment, stating “BLANK CAP OFF, BLANK CAP OFF” Donor places the Recipients right hand on the Donor’s secondary supply hose connector. Recipient places their left hand on their own facemask hose, about six inches above the connector. Donor places their hands either side of the Recipients facemask hose connector.

Donor calls; “ Ready? Take a deep breath” Recipient confirms; “Ready”, and takes a breath in. On hearing the confirmation, the Donor breaks the Recipient’s facemask hose connection. Donor states; “ hose connection broken”, and drops their hands away from the Recipient’s air hoses

Recipient slides their left hand down their facemask hose and locates the connector. Recipient brings their left hand to their right hand, and makes the new connection in the Donor’s secondary supply connector. Recipient states “COMPLETED” to confirm that they are now breathing off the Donor’s air supply

The Recipient then removes the second person connection hose from the clips of the Donor’s set. The Donor can assist if required. The Recipient then links arms with the Donor to prevent excessive strain placed on supply hoses and connections. The team decide whether to adopt the entrapped procedure or make their way out.

The Recipient than activates his ADSU The wearer with the radio contacts ECO with the following information: State “BA Emergency, second person attachment instigated” The names and location of the wearers involved. Gauge reading of the Donors set Whether they are adopting the entrapped procedure or are making their way out. The Recipient than activates his ADSU
