Presentation transcript:

Samson – the Weak Superhero Part 3 …And Samson made a feast there, as was customary for bridegrooms... (Judges 14:10b)

Samson – the Weak Superhero Part 3 He went down to Ashkelon, struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of their belongings and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger, he went up to his father’s house… (Judges 14:19) And Samson’s wife was given to the friend who had attended him at his wedding… (Judges 14:20) Later on, at the time of wheat harvest, Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. He said, “I’m going to my wife’s room.” But her father would not let him go in… (Judges 15:1)

Samson – As a Metaphor The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD; they forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs… (Judges 3:7) Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, so the LORD delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years... (Judges 13:1)

Samson – As a Metaphor Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the LORD.”… (Hosea 1:2) Then three thousand men from Judah went down to the cave in the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Don’t you realize that the Philistines are rulers over us? What have you done to us?”… (Judges 15:11)

Samson’s – Scorched Earth Policy

God’s Policy You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also…(Matthew 5:38-39) The only way to overcome evil is to let it run to a standstill because it does not find the resistance it is looking for. Resistance merely creates further evil and adds fuel to the flames… (Dietrich Bonhoeffer: The Cost of Discipleship)

A Cry for Refreshment Because he was very thirsty, he cried out to the LORD, “You have given your servant this great victory. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?”… Then God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When Samson drank, his strength returned and he revived… (Judges 15:18-19)

Samson – the Weak Superhero Part 3 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be good if one man died for the people… (John 17:12-14)
