Jaques Cartier was a French explorer looking for a new way to Asia Jaques Cartier was a French explorer looking for a new way to Asia. He sailed in 1534.

He was sponsored by the king of France, King Francis the first.

He tried to sail through present day Canada.

While in North America he explored a river that he named St While in North America he explored a river that he named St. Lawrence after a Native American festal.

Jaques Cartier claimed land for france and helped map makers make maps.

He also brought back riches and Native Americans as slaves back to France.
