After you have read, respond to the following question as your drill (be ready to discuss): What purpose of government impacts us most on a daily basis? Explain.

Police Brutality You and your group members are part of an advisory team. The death of Freddy Gray has prompted rioting and looting in the streets. Working in your team, establish an emergency plan to prepare for the riots. In each section, explain what actions you will be taking and how you intend to fulfill all purposes of government.

Riot Plan: Questions to consider What public services will be critical for the government to provide when there is a riot? What steps do you believe the government needs to take to maintain order? If the military will be put to use, how will you order them to be used? Be specific. Local police? Ask for help from national guard? This will be a very expensive project for the government. As mayor, how would you propose to pay for the expenses (taxes, loans from national government) of these riots and the clean-up and rebuilding after?

Create an Elevator Pitch

Purposes of Government in the Real World You will work in a group of 2 Around the room, you will find several current event articles related to the four purposes of government: a. Maintaining social order b. Providing national security c. Providing public services d. Making economic decisions

Purposes of Government Analysis For the last article that you are analyzing, complete the following: Identify what purpose of government you believe is related to the article. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, rank how well you believe this government action or policy will help accomplish the related purpose of government.

For each article, skim the article and work together to determine which purpose or purposes of government are being addressed in each article. Record the title of the article in the correct section of your chart that matches the purpose of government you believe it represents.

Purposes Assessment Work with your partners to complete questions 1-8 for the “Purposes of Government” assessment questions. For each question decide what purpose (s) of government are intended by the government. You may turn it in when you have finished the 8 questions.

Example: I believe that expanding the light rail trains ranks as a “7” in providing public services. I believe that having more public transportation will benefit many people. However, this project may be very expensive.
