Themes of History & Geography

Why are themes important? Facts & dates can be looked up. Themes allow historians to debate the importance of an event, document, etc. Themes allow historians to view an event from different perspectives. Themes allow a contextual understanding of an event, document, etc. Facts are not to be dismissed because they often can give a framework in which an event happens.

Themes of History Power & Authority Religious & Ethical Systems Revolution Interaction with Environment Economics Cultural Interaction Empire Building Science & Technology

5 Themes of Geography Location – The “address” of a place, either absolute or relative Place – The physical and human characteristics that make a place unique Interaction – How people and the environment affect each other Movement – How people, goods, ideas move from place to place Regions – The human and physical traits that distinguish one area from another
