1-2 Themes in Biology

Diversity & Unity of Life Diversity: There’s lots of different living things. Unity: All these different living things have certain things in common A genetic code These relationships can be shown with a “tree of life” model.

Three Domains 3 Categories of all living things Bacteria, Archae, & Eukarya Another way to categorize living things is the “Kingdom” system 6 Kingdoms Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Bacteria, Archaea

Interdependance Organisms & their environment interact Ecology studies this Ecosystems are communities of living things and their environments Humans really interact with the environment

Evolution of Life You will change during your life All of humanity will change over several generations This explains the branches of the tree of life

Natural Selection Some organisms have certain favorable traits that make them better able to survive and have more kids that survive. Over time there will be more of these kids and the population will start to look different. Differential Reproductive Success

1. Name 3 Unifying themes of biology

How is the unity and diversity in the living world represented as a model?

I.D. the 3 domains

How are organisms interdependant?

Describe why evolution is important in explaining the diversity of life?

What is the difference between evolution and natural selection?

Fossil evidence shows that bats descended from shrewlike organisms that could not fly. Write a hypothesis for how natural selection might have led to flying bats.
