Presentation transcript:

Explain how European partitioning in SW Asia, after the breakup of the Ottoman Empire, led to regional conflict.

Ottoman Empire Osman – leader of one Muslim tribe in Turkey in the 13th century Had a dream of building a large empire

Decline of Ottoman Empire Started around the 1700’s Hard to control such a large empire with leaders that could not hold on to territories Other European countries became stronger These European countries searched for more natural resources and new markets which took land from the Ottomans

The Big Fight

World War 1 CENTRAL POWERS Ottoman Empire Germany Italy and others ALLIED POWERS Great Britain France United States Arab states* and others

Allied Powers Win With the help of the Arabs* The British and French partitioned, or divided the land, owned by the Ottoman Empire These Europeans countries (Great Britain and France) also colonized, or took control of the land

British and French break their promise Arabs joined the fight against the Ottoman Empire with the promise that the Arabs would rule the land taken from the Ottomans The British and French made secret deals and kept the land for themselves

Partitioning of the land When the British and French (Europeans) divided the land they did not think about the ethnic and religious groups that lived there. Conflict started between the people and with the Europeans Lack of Nationalism, or loyalty to a group with whom one shares a common history, culture, and/or religion

Assignment Choose 1 Write a journal entry from the perspective of citizen of the Ottoman Empire describing what it is like to have your land partitioned. Use your senses to describe your feelings and thoughts. Write a journal entry from the perspective of a European soldier who has gone in to partition the land. What is he thinking? What is he feeling? Use your senses. Create a visual showing both perspectives (a citizen and a soldier). This could be a comic strip, story board, poster, political cartoon, etc. Create an agenda (calendar) that shows important events about the demise of the Ottoman Empire and the European partitioning of the region. Include specific details as well as events that may have occurred. You may complete this from the perspective of the Ottomans or the Europeans.
