Addison’s disease Addison Foster 3rd hour

The disease is named after its discoverer, Dr The disease is named after its discoverer, Dr. Thomas Addison, a British surgeon. 70% of cases are the result of the adrenal cortex (a hormonal gland on top of each kidney) being destroyed by the body's own immune system, that’s why Addison's is called an autoimmune disease.

This disease affects 1-person per 100,000, but happens at all age levels in males and females. The cultural group in general that is affected by this disease is people from 30 to 50

Symptoms Extreme fatigue Weight loss and decreased appetite Darkening of your skin Low blood pressure, even fainting Salt craving Low blood sugar Nausea, diarrhea or vomiting Abdominal pain Muscle or joint pains Irritability Depression or other behavioral symptoms Body hair loss or sexual dysfunction in women

affects Addison’s disease is a condition that affects your body’s adrenal glands. These glands are located on top of your kidneys. They make hormones that affect your mood, growth, metabolism, tissue function, and how your body responds to stress.

Cause of disease Addison’s disease develops when adrenal glands do not produce enough of these hormones. Specifically, cortisol, the hormone essential for helping the body cope with stress and regulates the body’s use of protein, carbohydrates, fat, maintains blood pressure and cardiovascular function, as well as controls inflammation.

treatments Treating Addison’s disease usually is taking prescription hormones. This can include hydrocortisone, prednisone, or cortisone acetate. If your body is not making enough of the hormone aldosterone, your doctor may prescribe fludrocortisone. These medicines are taken every day by mouth (in pill form).Your doctor may also recommend that you take a medicine called dehydroepiandrosterone. Some women who have Addison’s disease find that taking this medicine improves their mood.

How to prevent Addison’s disease cannot be prevented or avoided.

Life with the disease Living with Addison’s disease involves learning to live with the unpleasant symptoms. In addition, you need to prepare for the possibility of Addisonian crisis. This is a medical emergency that requires you to: Carry a medical alert card and bracelet at all times. This gives emergency medical workers information about your condition. Keep extra medicine with you in case you forget to take your medicine. Ask your doctor for an injectable form of corticosteroids for use in an emergency. Tell your doctor if your symptoms change or if your medicines stop working the way they used to.
