A revealing issue The focus on “modest adornment” today is not the same as it was in the first century. First century: outward adorning of jewelry, hair styles. Today: tight/form fitting or lack of clothing. The principle of “modest adornment” is appropriate in all cultures and generations. Principle: “the hidden person of the heart.” 1 Pet. 3:4 *The Washington Times, More women lured to pornography addiction, Rachel B. Duke, Sunday, July 11, 2010.

What Does The New Testament Reveal? 1 Timothy 2:9-10 1 Pet. 3:3-4ff

1 Timothy 2:9-10 “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.” (1 Timothy 2:9–10, NASB95)

1 Peter 3:3-4… “Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God….” (1 Peter 3:3–4, NASB95)

Getting at the heart of modesty The inward adornment: the hidden person of the heart. The outward adornment: reflects the heart PRINCIPALLY: the focus: on the flesh (outward adorning) or on the spirit (inward adorning… reflected by your works).

What Love DOES… N.T. writers only spoke to women on this issue. Such is not limited to women only… Love thinks and behaves accordingly: on behalf of the other person. People adorning themselves are considerate of other people. Other people are considerate of the adorned person.

Addendum Principle (1 Corinthians 6:18–20) Direct context: man with father’s wife. Principally: using our body (whether by adornment or by how we look upon another person) for the Lord. Matt. 5:28
