Social Changes As a teen, you are learning to act independently and make more decisions for yourself. Your increasing independence can sometimes lead to differences with family members. Many times, conflicts can arise when teens and parents or guardians disagree on how much independence a teen should receive. You may have a curfew to be home by 9 p.m. on school nights. Your parents or guardians set these rules to keep you safe. Other rules are set in the form of laws. If you continue to follow the rules your parents set and avoid breaking any laws, you show them that you respect the rules. Your parents will recognize that you are trustworthy. They may allow you to make more of your own decisions. Lesson Home

Changes During Puberty LESSON 1 Changes During Puberty BIG IDEA You will go through many physical, mental/emotional, and social changes during your teen years. Social Changes Peer influences such as friends who study hard or do volunteer work can be positive. However, some influences, such as a friend urging you to drink alcohol, may be negative. During your teen years, your peers are likely to play a growing role in your life. You may spend more time with friends and less with family members. Often, your peers will influence your ideas and your behavior. For example, you may change the way you dress or the music you prefer in order to be more like your friends. Changes like this are typical, but in other cases, peer influences can be unhealthy. For example, peers may urge you to engage in harmful behaviors, such as drinking or smoking. On the other hand, peer influence can also be positive, as in the case of friends who study hard or do volunteer work. Lesson Home
