Figure 1 Sex specific changes in germ cell differentiation during ovary and testes development. At 11 dpc (left), the presence of CYP26B1 in the gonad inhibits meiosis in the germ cells of females (XX) and males (XY). After expression of the male determining gene Sry, Cyp26b1 expression is upregulated in the testis. In the ovary (bottom), Cyp26b1 expression is downregulated and RA induces meiosis of germ cells.
