Composing and Decomposing Numbers By Mrs. Justine Buonovolonta Resource Room Teacher Wood Park Primary School

Early Composing and Decomposition: Kindergarten- First Grade Use concrete items such as cubes to demonstrate Learning about ways to build numbers… Making 6: The 4 and 2 way Making 6: The 5 and 1 way

Students can also draw cubes if they prefer… Number Bonds are just one type of pictorial representations of the concrete models. Students can also draw cubes if they prefer… Making 5, the 2 and 3 way Making 7, the 5 and 2 way

Solve for missing numbers by understanding what is missing… part missing part 1 2 3 4 5 whole Here we know the whole is 7. We are looking for a missing part. Use 7 cubes or coins to model this example. I have 7 cubes. I can decompose that into 5 and ….what? What number do I need as the other part? (2)

Solve for missing numbers by understanding what is missing… Here we know the parts and we need to find the whole. Use cubes to model this example. I have 2 blue cubes and I have 3 yellow cubes.

Solve for missing numbers by understanding what is missing… To find the whole, I combine the parts. 2 and 3 make 5.
