Brother is ashamed and embarrassed to have a brother who is handicapped. He pushes his brother to the limit until one rainy evening his brother has a hear attack and dies. The theme of this story is pride can be harmful when pushing others when it is beyond their limits because Brother is mad that his brother is handicapped, pushes his brother to walk, and leaves his brother behind while in a storm.

Body Paragraphs Topic Sentence One reason that the theme of this story is pride can be harmful when pushing others beyond their limits because Brother is mad that Doodle is handicapped. Example To begin with, when Doodle was born, there was a chance he would not live and Brother felt that Doodle was already a disappointment. SAY The character felt, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow” (Hurst 385). MEAN This shows that Brother feelings towards his brother are very deadly because he wanted a brother who was not handicapped. MATTER This is evidence of the theme because Brother wanted a brother to play with and sadly he could not do this with Doodle which causes him to be angry towards him.
