DNA (Deoxynucleic acid) Periplasmic Space Chemical reactions take place to allow substances to be transported into or out of the cell. THE BACTERIAL CELL Cytoplasm Where proteins carry out chemical reactions, important for the workings of the cell to take place (the factory floor). Cell Membrane Controls what enters and leaves the cell. Ribosomes Make proteins using the coded instructions hidden in the DNA sequence. Flagella Allows the cell to swim and move around. Outer membrane Tough layer giving the cell shape and protecting the cell from damage. DNA (Deoxynucleic acid) The code that tells the cell how to form all of the proteins it needs, including how to make another copy of itself. Pilli (fimbriae) For bacteria to attach themselves to things such as your cells. This work is part of the DNA-TRAP research network supported by the European Union’s  Seventh Framework Programme under the Industry-Academia Partnership and Pathways initiative.
