Carboxylic Acids Read pp. 218-219
Carboxylic Acids Has a carboxyl group (-COOH, typically shown as C=O and –OH on the same C atom) General Formula:
Uses Acetic acid Citric acid Oxalic acid (rust remover and brass cleaner) ASA (Aspirin) Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
Naming Carboxylic Acids Take parent name of alkane chain, drop the ‘e’, and replace it with ‘oic acid’.
Drawing Carboxylic Acids a) butanoic acid b) hexanoic acid
Properties of Carboxylic Acids As with all other acids, they turn blue litmus paper into RED. The presence of the –OH group makes them polar Due to polarity, have high melting points. The more COOH groups present, the higher the melting point.
