Volume 20, Issue 4, Pages R136-R140 (February 2010) Working memory  Alan Baddeley  Current Biology  Volume 20, Issue 4, Pages R136-R140 (February 2010) DOI: 10.1016/j.cub.2009.12.014 Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 The model of working memory proposed in 1974 [2]. The earlier concept of the short-term memory has been elaborated to include an attentional controller and two modality based temporary stores. The components are assumed to interact, and to be linked to both perception and long-term memory. Figure 2 A later development of the multicomponent model. It includes links to long-term memory and a fourth component, the episodic buffer that is accessible to conscious awareness. Figure 3 A more detailed formulation of the phonological loop model based on both behavioural and neuropsychological evidence [12]. Current Biology 2010 20, R136-R140DOI: (10.1016/j.cub.2009.12.014) Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd Terms and Conditions

Figure 4 Cowan's model, which treats working memory as the temporary activation of areas of long-term memory. Current Biology 2010 20, R136-R140DOI: (10.1016/j.cub.2009.12.014) Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd Terms and Conditions
