The 4 Rules for Solving Equations

Subtract 4 from both sides first. Solve. 3x + 4 = 13 Subtract 4 from both sides first. 3x = 9 3 3 x = 3

Subtract 6 from both sides first. Solve. -5x + 6 = 16 Subtract 6 from both sides first. -5x = 10 -5 -5 x = -2

Solve. 9x - 6 = 39 Add 6 to both sides first. 9x = 45 9 9 x = 5

Collecting Like Terms in Equations 4 - 2x + 8 = 16 Combine like terms first: -2x + 12 = 16 -12 -12 -2x = 4 -2 -2 x = -2

Solve. 2(2y + 3) = 14 4y + 6 = 14 -6 -6 4y = 8 4 4 y = 2

Solve. 4(3x - 2) + 12x = 40 12x - 8 + 12x = 40 24x – 8 = 40 +8 +8 24x = 48 24 24 x = 2
