Fragmentation / MTU Issue on new EtherType Basic issue: Ethernet transport does not support fragmentation Alternatives Option 1: Define fragmentation mechanism in MIH protocol Change to MIH protocol format is needed Change to MIH state machines is needed It will take one or two months to complete the work ?? Option 2: MIH message size that exceeds link-layer MTU require IP transport How MIHF can find MTU of underlying link layer? If there is no bridge in the LAN, 802.1AB can be used for finding the MTU What if the LAN consists of multiple LAN segments? Each LAN segment may have different MTUs How to find path-MTU in the LAN? Requires a couple weeks of time for more investigations on whether this is feasible or not Option 3: Always use IP after authentication and no new Ethertype is required IP supports fragmentation Path-MTU discovery at IP layer can be used for finding minimum MTU on the path Nothing needs to be changed except for some clean-up 21-08-0146-00-0000
