The Nazis hoped to capture the fortress in a few hours. But the heroic defense lasted for about a month.   The defenders of the Brest Fortress fought for every inch of ground

Buildings were destroyed but the defenders, their wives and children went down into the cellars.

Brest Fortress was surrounded Brest Fortress was surrounded. The whole area around the fort was occupied by the enemy but a red flag was waving above it.

Nothing could break the will and courage of the garrison.

The defenders of the fortress had no ammunition, food and even water because water supply was blown up by fascists.

The defenders of the Brest Fortress fought to the last drop of blood The defenders of the Brest Fortress fought to the last drop of blood. Here arethe inscriptions on the walls of the fortress: "Goodbye, Motherland! We die but do not yield! "

Now Fortress is a huge open-air museum

The heroic defense of the Brest Fortress demonstrated to the world the greatest firmness, courage and strength of a Soviet soldier. On July 28, 1944 Soviet troops liberated Brest.

On May 8, 1965 by the Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the Brest Fortress was conferring the honorary title "Hero-Fortress".
