Measurements:

Measurements: Learning Objectives How to make a perfect Data Table How to Make a perfect Line Graph How to accurately measure: Length, Weight, Volume Vocabulary to Know: Mass, Displacement, Meniscus

Measurements for Labs/Projects Perfect Data Tables Have: -Titles -labels for every set of variables… -with units (ex: meter, cm, sec, liters, ) - all categories filled in as much as possible Pg 25

Measurements for Labs/Projects Perfect Data Tables Have: -Titles -labels for every set of variables …. - with units (ex: mL) - all categories filled in as much as possible Pg 25

Axis labels with units and scale them properly & equally Perfect Graphs Have: Tile of Graph Axis labels with units and scale them properly & equally (0, 1, 2, 3,….) or (5, 10, 15, 20, 25,….) etc All Data Points Correctly Placed and evenly spaced Monthly Number of Rainy Days in U.S. Cities 5 10 15 20 25 Jan Feb March April May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Time (months) Rainfall (inches) Santa Fe, NM Buffalo, NY Los Angeles, CA

ALL Data points correctly placed & evenly spaced Perfect Graphs Have: ALL Data points correctly placed & evenly spaced Make sure all data series are labeled with a Key (if needed) Decide on an appropriate graph style (line, bar, or pie graphs) Monthly Number of Rainy Days in U.S. Cities 5 10 15 20 25 Jan Feb March April May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Time (months) Rainfall (inches) Santa Fe, NM Buffalo, NY Los Angeles, CA

Bar Graphs (again w/ Title, Axis labeled w/ units and scaled properly)

(used when dealing with parts of a whole that add to 100%) Pie graphs (used when dealing with parts of a whole that add to 100%) % of Rainy Days in Santa Fe by Month Jan 7% Feb 6% March April 5% May 8% June July 19% Aug 21% Sept Oct Nov 4% Dec Jan Feb March April May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec

Using Graphs to support your ideas

Units = Meter (m), Kilometer (km), Centimeter (cm) Measurements Length : a measured distance between 2 points Units = Meter (m), Kilometer (km), Centimeter (cm)

Mass: a measure of the amount of matter in an object Weight: the mass of an object multiplied by the acceleration of the gravity Weight = mass x gravity The same unit (grams/kilograms) are used for both mass & weight and for our use/purpose they mean the same thing, just be aware they are not same Pg 25 & King Henry WS

Volume: how much space an object takes up in 3D. Units = (same as for liquids) Liters (L) or Milliliters (ml)

Displacement: measuring Volume by putting a sinking object into a known amount of water (best when formulas don’t work) Meniscus: Greek word meaning crescent; a curve in the surface of a liquid
