Teacher training reading camp

Reading Camp is not school cardinal rule Reading Camp is not school

Learning should be fun! Bring the most effective and innovative activities from your classroom: activities that require student hands on

school vs. reading camp But that… Not this… Seated at desks and tables Teacher chalkboard/whiteboard Lecture Teaching to Worksheets and textbooks Intimidated Passive learning Textbooks But that… Seated on floors and moving Camper held chalkboard/whiteboard Collaboration Learning with Games and activities Encouraged Active learning Fun books, magazines, newspapers, etc.

creating your community Post camp rules (3-5) Discuss how they apply in the learning center Create a safe learning environment by emphasizing respect of people and answers Constantly create opportunities for success while stretching and challenging

Flexibility Be mindful of camper engagement during lessons Don’t hesitate to switch activities It’s okay to have one activity all week long if they are engaged Let camper engagement guide the length of the activity

working with the counselors One-on-one help for a child struggling with the activity Counselors as participants and models of appropriate engagement in learning center activities Redirect camper to kinesthetic or other learning activity away from the group

connecting body and mind Choose a daily kinesthetic activity for your center Begin each rotation with the activity Use kinesthetics for redirection

Minds in motion maze overview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW7rEzBje7o&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DcW7rEzBje7o&app=desktop

connecting with all campers Plan a variety of activities that apply to all learning styles Kinesthetic Auditory Visual Read/Write

kinesthetic Learning by doing… Beach ball with comprehension questions Start a story and have each child add to the storyline Play a phonics game

Auditory Learning by hearing… Read a story and ask comprehension questions verbally Read or say words out loud to match beginning and ending sounds Read through sight words out loud

visual Learning by seeing… Sight words posted on the wall Spell words with a game like hangman Comprehension bookmarks

Bookmark activity Does it make sense? (prior knowledge) Look for key clues (context clues and picture clues) Listen to how it sounds (letter sounds and grammar) Look for little words in big words (letter patterns) Search for similarities (letter patterns, letter sounds and grammar) Try a popper (letter sounds and context clues) Backtrack and read again (prior knowledge and context clues) Skip it and go on (context clues)

Read/write Learning by reading and writing… Read parts in a play or take turns reading the story Read a list of rhyming words and continue the pattern on a whiteboard Read on a topic and react to it in writing

Evaluations Provide good data for grants and other fund development Assess effectiveness Identify strengths and weaknesses

evaluation guidelines Pre and post should be conducted by the same person Environment should be free of distraction No influence by evaluator Quality instruments = quality results (gather experts in the field to help you create or identify the instruments)

Daily meetings Lead by the head teacher Bring success stories Discuss challenges Work through solutions
