The pericardium, the heart, and the pulmonary artery are not shown. The malacic anterior wall of the trachea is suspended to the back wall of the sternum by a 3-0 nonabsorable suture. This suture crosses (and partially compresses) the left phrenic nerve, and this compression eventually causes diaphragmatic paralysis.
