Renegade Music Magazine Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products? My media product adopts different themes from different magazines like Q (http://www.qthemusic.com/) and NME (http://www.nme.com/) music magazines such as the general layout of the front page and how the content is composed on the page. These magazines try to break the trends when it comes to conventional layouts in their front pages and double-page spreads so I have tried to emulate them in my structure and layout with a similar style of masthead, coverlines, selling lines and also a similar price as it is a suitable price for the content available in a monthly magazine.

How does your media product represent particular social groups? My media product represents particular social groups by using a title and style which they will be able to relate to. My chosen genre is an alternative genre of a mixture of indie and hip-hop/rap and the content and style of the magazine reflects this in its use of language and style. The colours I have used reflect appropriately the style and style of my target audience.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? My media product is a mainstream music magazine so it would be distributed by a major publishing company like Bauer Media (http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/) who also publish magazines such as Kerrang! (http://www.kerrang.com/) And Q magazine. This institution began its magazine heritage in 1953 and has grown exponentially since then recording a turnover of 2.08 billion euros in 2008.

Who would be the audience for your media product? The audience of my music magazine would be teenagers/young adults up to the age of 21. My product would be for the social classes B to C1. My magazine would be for both the male and female genders but may attract more of a male following as it has quite a masculine layout and style. My magazine will appeal towards a mixture of social groups.

How did you attract/address your audience? I used quite a surreal, quirky style in my magazine which will appeal to my target audience as they are at the age where they are more open and are developing their individual styles. My magazine uses a direct mode of address as the images I have used are mostly front facing which includes my front cover as my model is looking straight at the camera. This direct mode of address I have adopted allows the magazine to have a more intimate feeling.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? I have learnt a lot about the way in which technologies are intrinsic in producing my particular media product. Computer software such as Adobe Photoshop is very useful in editing images to use in my media product. My product has been uploaded onto a blog page which is a very new thing to me and it took a while to come to grips with it. Blogging has become a major part of media in the past decade and it continues to grow. I have learnt that media products simply would not be in existence without the use of special equipment like cameras and access to appropriate computer software.

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in progression to your final piece? Since completing my preliminary school magazine I have learnt a lot mostly about more advanced methods in how to use software such as photoshop and also how to utilise blogging sites to basically show my project. I have also learnt how to base my work around my target audience and my chosen genre. I have learnt how to refine the content and style of my magazine.
