What about me? Who am I? Who are these people? What are their professions? Let’s type “Dr. Phil”, “psychologist”, etc. on a blank document. We’ll type other images on this document as well and periodically look for common patterns in the words. http://www.nascar.com/2005/news/headlines/cup/03/13/dearnhardtjr_wreck/ http://www.00ebooks.com/dr_phil_books.htm

What do these items have in common? http://www.madlantern.com/clipart/clips/Summervac2001/Kite.gif What are these images? [add to document] Do they have anything in common? http://www.parties-direct.com/product_info.php/products_id/648

http://www.illustrations.com/images/illpix/anger.gif What about Do you know what these images are? [type] Could the peace sign be symbolic of something else? [type answer] Let’s take a moment to look at what we’ve typed so far. Do you notice any similarities between the words? Can you create any categories? these??? http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/govt393.html

Which category would this be? Which category would this belong? [type] http://www.matterbrothersfurniture.com/bedroom.htm#watersEdg%20br

Would these pictures belong in the same group? http://www.takoma.com/archives/copy/2003/08/independenceday2003.1.html Tell me about this picture. [type] Would these pictures belong in the same category? Why or why not? Would these pictures belong in the same group? http://www.incrediblepeople.com/pastfeatindex.htm

Do you recognize this building? Do you know where this is? [type] http://www.burke.k12.nc.us/ebms/

What about these? http://www.eskimo.com/~michiko/oldies/oldies8.html http://shopping.indiatimes.com/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/Gazebo/macros/index.d2w/report Which category would these pictures fall under? Are any of the pictures symbolic of something else? [type] http://www.columbia.edu/cu/iraas/acjpconf/

Let’s place these somewhere http://www.forward21.com/style/shirt/ http://www.mayo.edu/mms/ Now it’s time to examine these pictures. Where should they be placed? [type] When you analyze the categories that we’ve created, what do you notice? Does any of the categories need to be revised? [type] Now it’s time to copy the categories that you’ve created into your grammar notebook. http://www.aviewoncities.com/gallery/showpicture.php?key=kvefr004&dir=towers&tpe=cat

Person Let’s check your “person” category. Did you have everything correct?

Place What about “place”?

Thing Was your “thing” category correct?

Idea Finally, the “idea” category. Did you have all of these written? How can we can distinguish an idea from a person, place, or thing?

Could any of these pictures be placed in other categories? Let’s look at how the actual words are written. What do you notice? Could we arrage them differently? [type] Now look at the new categories. What do we call these categories? Right, there known as “Proper Nouns” and “Common Nouns”? Remind me, how can we differentiate between the two categories again? Let’s examine our pictures again. As we go back and look at the categories, think whether we could rearrange any of the pictures into other categories.
