The Campaign’s map 3 million people All Hospitals, Primary Care and Ambulance services Six content areas Leadership Critical Care/Rapid response Medicines Healthcare associated infection Surgical care General medical and surgical care Aims To save 1000 lives Avoid 50,000 cases of harm over a 2 year period (2008-2010) When the 1000 Lives Campaign was launched two years ago – this was the canvas: An all Wales focus – engaging all of secondary and primary care, as well as the Ambulance Service Six key content areas – clearly defined areas where progress could be made – recognising that no real progress could be made without the involvement of senior leadership and then specific clinical areas Two main aims – to save a 1000 lives and avoid 50,000 cases of harm over a two year period. Equally important, is the Campaign’s main aim to introduce and embed new ways of working that will be make the NHS in Wales safer not only for two years but decades to come. www.1000livesplus.wales.nhs.uk 5

Two years that made a difference 852 lives have been saved by NHS staff in Wales in the first 18 months More than 29,000 episodes of harm have been averted in the first 12 months When the Campaign ended last month, these were the latest set of figures. We are well on the way to reaching the target of saving 1000 additional lives and preventing 50,000 episodes of harm. At this point, we simply want to say …. www.1000livesplus.wales.nhs.uk 6 6

The next phase www.1000livesplus.wales.nhs.uk The 1000 Lives Plus programme that we are launching today/this week/this month enables this ground-breaking work to continue. www.1000livesplus.wales.nhs.uk

NEW interventions Depression Dementia Reduce Mortality and Morbidity resulting from Acute Coronary Syndrome Patient Identifiers Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Reducing Falls in Intermediate Care Maternity Services Preventing stroke through timely management of Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) Rehabilitation following Stroke These are the new interventions being developed and which move the work of 1000 Lives Plus forward www.1000livesplus.wales.nhs.uk

we can do it for everyone in Wales. If we can improve care for one patient, then we can do it for ten. If we can do it for ten, then we can do it for a 100. If we can do it for a 100, we can do it for a 1000 And if we can do it for a 1000, we can do it for everyone in Wales. The focus of this work – which will be unpacked throughout today – is on the importance of spreading the good practice that you have developed. 1000 Lives Plus is committed to ensuring that the good work now taking place on a few wards becomes common place on every ward in Wales; It working to ensure the excellent work that’s been piloted in the community takes place in every Welsh community. It wants the great care delivered in Bangor to be the same as in Newport and vice versa. We now know we can do it for all of Wales – and 1000 Lives Plus is focussed on makingthat happen.
