Presentation transcript:

How far had Henry VII consolidated his authority? Good learning: Recall the content of the course so far Great learning: Explain the different ways in which Henry had consolidated his authority Even better: Evaluate how far Henry had consolidated his authority Key Word: How effectively did the Tudors restore and develop the powers of the monarchy?

What had an impact on Henry’s power? On your whiteboard make a list of all the different things we have looked at so far which could have an impact on his authority as a monarch (think about both positive and negative). Government Nobility Foreign policy Rebellion Next to each one explain how it had an impact on Henry’s authority. Finance

Match the point to the correct evidence as they are all jumbled up. How did these different elements affect Henry’s power? TASK You have each been given a sheet that has both POINTS (these link to one of the 5 elements we have just looked at) and EVIDENCE (these link to points on the opposite side). You need to complete the following: Highlight whether the point belongs to government, finance, nobility, foreign policy or rebellions(you will notice some are repeated for different catagories). Match the point to the correct evidence as they are all jumbled up.

How did these different elements affect Henry’s power? Government Local Government Central Government (Parliament) New Institution (CLiL AND SC) Finance Attainders Crown Lands Legal dues Nobility How it was hard to become a noble Retaining Foreign policy International recognition Security in the North Security against pretenders Rebellions Stopping International Support How he handled rebels (pardon) How he handled rebels (harsh) TASK Have another look at your sheet. Number the 5 key sections 1 to 5 based which you think helped secure Henry’s authority the most. Explain your scores.

‘……………. was the main reason that Henry VII was able to consolidate his authority’. Assess the validity of this view. Look back at the section that you gave a number 1 to and insert that in to the question as you copy it down. Using the structure below you will need to argue that this was the main reason henry was able to consolidate his authority. You will also need to counter this argument with other factors (from the list) that also had an impact on consolidating his authority before reaching your judgement. Introduction Context – background information to the question/what you are going to talk about. Criteria – how will you define consolidation of authority? Argument – what is your essay going to argue Main body Arguments for: Arguments against: Conclusion Summarise your explanation on each factor you mention Come to your overall argument

Was England a more powerful country under Henry VII? Finally I would like us to think about if England was a more powerful country under Henry VII based on what we know so far. England was not a more powerful country England was a more powerful country On your whiteboards write down what you think it means to be a ‘powerful’ country. Put your name on the post-it and stick it in the star you agree with the most
